DESCRIPTION:SEMINAR SPEAKER: Dr. Etienne Garand\, University of Wisconsin-M
adison\n TITLE: Molecular structure and properties from cryogenic ion spect
roscopy ABSTRACT: The selectivity and sensitivity of mass spectrometry make
it a powerful analytical tool. However\, it is quite difficult to obtain
detailed information about molecular structure in mass spectrometry. This t
alk will present our efforts in enabling the spectroscopic characterization
of complex mass-selected ions using laser spectroscopy. Recent application
s to the study of peptide ion interactions and the characterization of orga
nic chromophores with unusual electronic structure will be presented. BIO:
Prof. Garand was born in Québec and completed his undergraduate studies at
the Université de Sherbrooke. In obtained his Ph.D. in experimental physica
l chemistry from UC Berkeley in 2010\, working under Prof. Daniel Neumark.
As a postdoctoral fellow\, he worked at Yale University with Prof. Mark Joh
nson on developing new approaches for ion spectroscopy. He started his inde
pendent career at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2012. His interest
s are in fundamental spectroscopic studies of molecular ions and in the dev
elopment of new mass spectrometry instruments with which to pursue these st
 udies.
