“BRUSHSTROKE BAY: BETTER ISLANDS”

BY GILLIAN DONLEY, MARIEL DOMNENKO AND YiFAN LUO,

mentor CHUCK CUSACK

We developed an Android app that utilized the Unity engine for visual art creation.  Our app added new mini games to an app that had been started already.  The Unity engine is a leading platform for creating both 2D and 3D games.

“USING A HAPTIC SENSOR TO TRAIN PROPER GRIP IMPROVE PERFORMANCE AND REDUCE RISK OF WRIST INJURIES IN NOVICE TENNIS PLAYERS”

BY MACKENZIE NISWONGER AND CHRIS LAUBACH,

mentor RYAN McFALL

A common problem in especially novice tennis players is gripping their racket too tightly or loosely, which can cause either errors in their tennis match or certain wrist injuries. Our goal for the summer was to design a project that minimizes this error. Through the use of a modified tennis racket and corresponding software, the project aimed to provide useful feedback to tennis players regarding their grip strength. The goals consisted of: (1) configuring a haptic sensor for an engineered tennis racket, (2) collecting the tennis player’s grip strength through the racket’s handle, (3) designing, implementing, and testing software to display the transmitted data, and (4) ultimately determine if the haptic sensor improves performance or reduces the risk of injury in tennis players.
