The De Pree Art Center and Gallery at Hope College will host the exhibition “Working Title” featuring work by Chicago-based artist Alberto Aguilar from Friday, March 3, through Thursday, March 30.

Aguilar will deliver an artist’s talk on Friday, March 3, at 4 p.m. in Cook Auditorium of the De Pree Art Center. The opening reception will immediately follow in the gallery.

The public is invited to the exhibition, artist’s talk and opening reception. Admission is free.

Aguilar uses whatever material is at hand in an attempt to make a meaningful connection with the viewer. He does not distinguish his art practice from his other various life roles, which allows him to make work wherever he is. “Working Title” has been created on-site with objects and materials from Hope College and Holland.

Aguilar, along with some of his family members, collectively organizes Mayfield, a multi-use space that operates on the grounds of his home. He has shown and presented his work at various museums, galleries, storefronts, homes and street corners around the world. Some of the venues include the Queens Museum; El Torito Supermercado; The Minneapolis Institute of Art; the corner of Cesar Chavez Avenue and North Broadway in Los Angeles, California; The Museum of Contemporary Art in Detroit; Chicago City Hall; The Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago; Museo Del Jamon in Madrid, Spain; The Art Institute of Chicago; The Chicago River (Jackson Bridge); The Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art; El Cosmico Trailer Park in Marfa, Texas; El Centro de Desarrollo de las Artes Visuales in Havana, Cuba; and Iowa rest stop I-80. His work is in the collection of the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, The Jorge Lucero Study Collection, Soho House, Meta - Facebook, The National Museum of Mexican Art and the office of Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot.

The De Pree Gallery is open weekdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.  The hours will be reduced during the weekdays of the college’s March 17-26 spring break, with the gallery open from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.  Those without a Hope College ID, which is necessary to gain access through the front door, should call the Department of Art and Art History at 616-395-7500 to gain entry.
