Diversity and Equity in Education Speaker Series: "What we mean when we say English "

This is a past event.

Friday, January 28, 2022 3pm to 4pm

Dr. Kristin Van Eyk - Visiting Professor of English at Hope College

What does it mean to be a teacher who uses English in the classroom? Whose English is taught and used, whose English is never taught and used, and who gets to decide? Whether you think about your language use in the classroom a little or a lot, the use of any language in an education space always transmits power and authority. Join us as we talk about what it means to teach the politics of English.

Bio: Kristin taught high school English(es) for 9 years in Grand Rapids, MI before pursuing her PhD in English and Education at the University in Michigan. Kristin is particularly interested in how people use language and interpret its use to signify power and belonging.
