From Scenic City to Motor City: My Career Path in Engineering"  by James Dorris, General Motors

In the hopes of demystifying what a career path in engineering could look like, James will share his experiences thus far as an engineer, from his academic career to his current position at General Motors. He will discuss his summer internship experiences at Shaw Industries and at Tennessee Valley Authority, in addition to his time as a graduate student and his career at General Motors. He will provide insight into why he made his academic and professional career choices and lessons he has learned.

Bio: James Dorris is a Designer in the Interior Mechanisms Group at General Motors. He received his B. S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Tennessee in 2012 and his M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the Pennsylvania State University in 2014. As part of the Interior Mechanisms Group, he works with a team to design components for center consoles across a variety of vehicles, primarily utilizing 3D CAD software to build parts and find creative solutions for packaging, performance, and manufacturing challenges related to part design.
