DESCRIPTION:An artist talk and live dance performance on Thursday\, Oct. 10
\, will open the next exhibition in the De Pree Art Center and Gallery at H
ope College.\n\nThe gallery will feature the exhibition “As we dwell in the
fold” by Andrea Canepa from Thursday\, Oct. 10\, through Thursday\, Nov. 7
. The opening events on Oct. 10 will include an artist talk by Canepa at 5
p.m.\; a live dance performance at 6 p.m. presented by Kaylin Bazick\, Emi
lee Bowden and Maggie Mallery of Turning Pointe School of Dance of Holland
that will be livestreamed at hope.edu/live\; and a reception at 7 p.m.\n\nT
he public is invited to the exhibition and the opening events. Admission i
s free.\n\n“As we dwell in the fold” is an immersive\, large-scale\, wearab
le installation of metal and fabric sculptures. The piece is designed to be
a tactile and experiential work activated first by a performance and later
by the audience of the exhibition. All objects can be interacted with\, an
d visitors alter the space through their experimentation with the many form
s.\n\nThis project is in part inspired by Canepa’s research into various pr
otective fabrics and their relation to the body: from funerary bundles of t
he ancient Paracas pre-Columbian culture\, to tapadas — Peruvian women in c
olonial Lima who used a veil to cover their faces revealing just one eye\,
to the folding patterns of modern-day parachutes. Drawing from ancient ritu
als and the Andean cultures’ mythology of the underworld and death\, Canepa
explores how fabrics shape the way we relate to our bodies and the politic
al and social aspects of un/wrapping or un/covering it. For the artist\, fa
brics can function as a preservation device — of the body\, of identity — w
hen they envelope it\, but also as an aid to transcend body limits when the
y expand from it.\n\n“As we dwell in the fold” debuted at the Eli and Edyth
e Broad Art Museum at Michigan State University in September 2023. The exhi
bition is currently on loan from the Broad Art Museum.\n\nAndrea Canepa (Li
ma-1980) is a visual artist who lives and works in Berlin\, Germany. She wo
rks primarily with installation\, sculpture\, textiles and performance.\n\n
She started her studies in fine arts at the Pontificia Universidad Católica
del Perú and completed them at the Universidad Politécnica de Valencia\, w
here she graduated with a master's degree in visual arts and multimedia. Sh
e has received grants from the German Art Fund Foundation\, the Senate for
Culture and Europe in Berlin and Endesa Foundation (Spain)\, and awards inc
luding the ARCO Community of Madrid Prize for Young Artists and the Generac

luding Gasworks (UK)\, Jan Van Eyck Academie (Netherlands)\, Cité des Arts
(France)\, Bauhaus Masters' Houses (Germany)\, MATADERO (Spain)\, Tokyo Won
der Site (Japan) and Beta Local (Puerto Rico)\, and was a 2018-19 recipient

DESCRIPTION:An artist talk and live dance performance on Thursday\, Oct. 10
\, will open the next exhibition in the De Pree Art Center and Gallery at H

that will be livestreamed at hope.edu/live\; and a reception at 7 p.m.\n\nT

d visitors alter the space through their experimentation with the many form
s.\n\nThis project is in part inspired by Canepa’s research into various pr
otective fabrics and their relation to the body: from funerary bundles of t
he ancient Paracas pre-Columbian culture\, to tapadas — Peruvian women in c
olonial Lima who used a veil to cover their faces revealing just one eye\,
to the folding patterns of modern-day parachutes.

Sh
e has received grants from the German Art Fund Foundation\, the Senate for
Culture and Europe in Berlin and Endesa Foundation (Spain)\, and awards inc
luding the ARCO Community of Madrid Prize for Young Artists and the Generac
iones Prize (Spain). She has participated in a number of residencies\, inc
luding Gasworks (UK)\, Jan Van Eyck Academie (Netherlands)\, Cité des Arts
(France)\, Bauhaus Masters' Houses (Germany)\, MATADERO (Spain)\, Tokyo Won
der Site (Japan) and Beta Local (Puerto Rico)\, and was a 2018-19 recipient
of the Spanish Academy in Rome Fellowship.\n\nCanepa has had solo shows at
the MSU Broad Museum\, De Appel in Amsterdam\, the Peruvian-American Cultu
ral Institute (ICPNA) in Lima\, Domus Artium Museum in Salamanca\, the Muse
um of Teruel and Sant Andreu Contemporani in Barcelona. Her works are part
of collections such as CA2M\, IVAM\, Museo de Teruel and MSU Broad Museum\,
