In 2013\, he received the Haimo Award\, a nationwide teac hing prize for college math faculty\, and in 2018 he won the Halmos-Ford w riting award. His research in geometric combinatorics includes many papers co-authored with undergraduates. His work has been featured in Quanta Mag azine\, Wired\, and the New York Times. His book Mathematics for Human Flo urishing (2020)\, winner of the 2021 Euler Book Prize\, has been translate d into 8 languages. It offers an inclusive vision of what math is\, who i t's for\, and why anyone should learn it.\n\nDr. Su’s presentation follo ws the title of his book: “Mathematics for Human Flourishing.” People often think of maths as just a set of skills\, like doing arithmetic or fa ctoring a quadratic. Yet amazingly\, maths is a deeply human enterprise th at can meet basic human longings\, such as for beauty and exploration and truth\, and can build virtues like persistence\, creativity\, joy and wond er. In an era where computers and AI can outperform humans at skills\, we must reclaim the importance of mathematics as a vehicle for developing vir tue. Gentile joined the Hope faculty in 197 6 and served as dean for the Natural and Applied Sciences Division from 19 88 to 2005\, when he became president of Research Corporation\, a private foundation in Tucson\, Arizona\, that supports basic research in the physi cal sciences.
