“OVERVIEW OF 3D SEISMIC INTERPRETATION: AN IBA EXPERIENCE”

by Makenna Hughes, Hope College student

As up-and-coming geologic and environmental scientists, it is no secret we will face a plethora    of unique and complex problems as we enter the workforce. Whether you are called to work to preserve our environment, collaborate with local agriculture industries, work in the mining industry, or work in the oil and gas field, you will encounter obstacles that can be solved through seismic processing and interpretation. This talk is aimed to provide insight into seismic
processing and interpretation skills found in our future professions through the lens of the Imperial Barrel Award (IBA) competition. As Hope students, you have a unique opportunity to engage hands-on with software and data analysis standards in many prominent industries as undergraduate students. Through programs like IBA and the SEG EVOLVE, you have the ability to cultivate skills and knowledge that will set you up for success in whatever field you choose to do.

Bio:
Makenna Hughes is a third-year undergraduate student at Hope College who is currently pursuing a double major in geology and English. As a freshman Makenna participated in the Phelps Scholars Program and the Michigan Rocks Day1 program. When not in class, she acts as a team member on the Hope Formula
Racing team, serving in a project management role. Makenna has also given several talks centered around disability awareness and advocacy through Hope Advocates for Invisible Conditions (HAIC) and Hope’s education department. At the just concluded SEG/AAPG 2024 International Meeting for Applied Geoscience
and Energy (IMAGE) conference held from 26-29 August 2024 in Houston, Texas, Makenna proudly presented her summer research on using AVO analysis to identify potential reservoirs. She was also awarded a travel grant to participate in both the prestigious SEG/Chevron Student Leadership Symposium (SLS), sponsored by Chevron, which took place on 24-26 August 2024, and the IMAGE conference.
