“Opportunities for Geoscientists in the Energy Addition (“Transition”)” by Jim White, Executive Director,
Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG)
As a global society for Applied Geophysics, the SEG is navigating the complex nature of global
energy demand. In today’s presentation, we will broadly discuss what Energy Addition
(Transition) is and what is driving it. Our thirst for energy will not wane and the demand to
meet the needs will be defined by how we can mitigate the effects of the carbon fuel usage. We
will review the UN Sustainability Goals recently set forth and how they are related to the
Geosciences. As students, your contributions are critical to the fact that you are part of the
solution. No matter whether your career begins with energy production or leads to carbon
solutions, there is a defined need for Geoscientists, so your future is bright.
Jim White has held several executive and board positions over a nearly 40-year career including Executive Vice President at WesternGeco, President of ES Xplore LLC, an electro-seismic subsurface imaging company founded by Hunt Oil, President and CEO at ARKeX Ltd, President of Discovery Acquisition Services,
Executive Vice President at Geokinetics Inc., and President and Chief Executive Officer at Trace Energy Services. Mr. White has also advisory experience to start-ups including a position with NEOS Geosolutions Inc. as Consultant to the CEO. He is currently Executive Director for the Society of Exploration Geophysicists
(SEG) in Houston, TX. Mr. White holds a BS in Geosciences from The Pennsylvania State University and held the position as Chairman for EnerGeo Alliance (formerly International Assoc. of Geophysical Contractors (IAGC)), a worldwide trade association for the geophysical and energy industries.
