Hope College’s Haworth Hotel will celebrate its grand reopening with an open house for the West Michigan and campus communities on Thursday, Sept. 2, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.
The public is invited. Admission is free.
The hotel reopened in June following a comprehensive remodeling that transformed the interior and reflects the facility’s new emphasis as a welcome center for visitors to the college and a gathering place for all. The project remodeled all conference and hotel rooms, rebuilt the lobby and added a full-service Biggby Coffee shop open to the public. The renovation was made possible through a gift from Haworth Inc. and was led by Patricia Urquiola, an award-winning designer and architect based in Milan, Italy, who has worked with the company for several years. Haworth products are featured throughout.
The three-story Haworth Hotel features 10,000 square feet of meeting space and 48 guest rooms, and is located at 225 College Ave., facing College Avenue between 9th and 10th streets.
The lobby has not only been redesigned by enlarged to feature additional informal seating, a new pre-function area outside the main ballroom and access to new meeting rooms, as well as the Biggby café. A new spiral staircase to the second floor provides access to a new meeting room, and for overnight guests a new exercise room that looks over the lobby.
The 48 guest rooms have been completely refurbished and refurnished, and include three ADA-accessible rooms and a private executive suite.
The building continues to serve as a conference center for the campus, Holland community and organizations from around the country. The largest of the 13 meeting and banquet facilities is 5,500 square feet in size and can accommodate groups of up to 400.
The hotel is operated for Hope by Creative Dining Services, which also provides food service for the rest of campus, and features an executive chef onsite. The staff includes employees of CDS and Hope.
The hotel opened in January 1997, and was named after Haworth in honor of donations to the college’s endowment. The renovation began in November 2019, with the project scheduled for completion in phases between May 2020 and the early fall of 2020, but was delayed because of the global COVID-19 pandemic, including a statewide shutdown of construction projects in the spring of 2020.
Additional architectural design for the Haworth Hotel was provided by GMB Architecture + Engineering of Holland and the general contractor was Owen-Ames-Kimball Co. of Grand Rapids. The total project cost is approximately $7.5 million.
