Showa, literally “Enlightened Harmony”, was the reign name of the Japanese emperor Hirohito, who ruled Japan from 1926 to 1989. This focus exhibition presents a selection of 20th century Japanese prints, textiles, ceramics and lacquers that were collected and donated to the Kruizenga Art Museum by the Hesselink family of Holland, Michigan. John and Etta Hesselink served the Reformed Church as missionaries and teachers in Japan from 1953 to 1973, and they and their five children all developed a deep appreciation for Japanese art and culture.
