Lecture: "Adam Smith, Economic Liberal?"

Monday, October 21 at 4:00pm

Van Zoeren Hall, 298
41 Graves Place, Holland, MI 49423-3617

Adam Smith, moral philosopher and the father of modern economics, is so influential and was so prolific, you can find people of all political leanings claiming his arguments as support of their own. Still, as a classical economist, Smith most frequently is labeled as laissez-faire or libertarian. Adam Smith scholar and philosopher, Dr. James Otteson of Wake Forest University, will discuss the areas in which Smith departed from the standard laissez-fair line. Topics will include his support for public schooling, progressive taxation, and public works, in order that we might better understand the real Smith's understanding of the role of government.
