Lecture: Alienated America

Monday, April 1 at 7:00pm to 8:30pm

Graves Hall, Winants Auditorium and Gallery
263 College Avenue, Holland, MI 49423-3646

Journalist and cultural commentator Timothy P. Carney of the American Enterprise Institute will offer a public lecture "Alienated America: Why Some Places Thrive While Others Collapse" on April 1 at 7 p.m. in Winants Auditorium.

Based on a recently released book of the same title(February 2019, Harper Collins), Carney will argue that the root issue in America's political divide is not fundamentally economic (e.g., income inequality, asymmetries in employment and economic hardship.) Using data and stories from around the country, he'll argue that "the dissolution of our most cherished institutions — nuclear families, places of worship, and civic organizations have not only divided us, but eroded our sense of worth, belief in opportunity, and connection to one another."
