The Saint Benedict Institute will host Louis Brown, executive director of the Christ Medicus Foundation, for a talk titled “Religious Freedom and Human Dignity: The Contemporary Crisis in Healthcare” on Tuesday, Sept. 20, at 7 p.m. at Hope College in Winants Auditorium of Graves Hall.

The public is invited. Admission is free.

A video recording of the event will be made available online afterward on the Saint Benedict Institute website.

Brown will explore the current landscape of religious freedom, the sanctity of life, and civil rights in a range of healthcare concerns and issues. He will discuss current threats to religious freedom, the foundational importance of human dignity, and how Christians can respond to the contemporary situation.

This event is co-sponsored by the Hope College departments of nursing, philosophy, political science and religion. It is also co-sponsored by the college’s Markets & Morality student organization and Pre-Law Society, and has been scheduled in conjunction with national Constitution Day, which will be three days earlier, on Sept. 17.

The Saint Benedict Institute is a ministry of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Holland. It seeks to promote and nurture intellectual work done from the heart of the Catholic Church, to foster an ecumenical community of Catholic Christians and friends committed to the renewal of culture, and to aid in the formation of intellectually and spiritually mature Christians by making available the riches of the Catholic tradition to Hope College and the wider community. More information can be found at saintbenedictinstitute.org.

The Markets & Morality student organization aims to support and celebrate freedom of expression in the context of the liberal arts by hosting speakers and films on topics spanning the economic, political and cultural aspects of human civilization, with a special concern for human flourishing as understood in Christian perspective.
