Musical Showcase Concert

Wednesday, March 13 at 7:30pm

Jack H. Miller Center for Musical Arts, Concert Hall
221 Columbia Avenue, Holland, MI 49423

Hope College will present its 31st Annual Musical Showcase on Wednesday, March 13 at 7:30 p.m. in the Concert Hall of the Jack H. Miller Center for Musical Arts.

Hope College students take the stage for this fast-paced, musical spectacular, during which audience members hear everything from opera to jazz. The hardest part for those seeing the show is containing their enthusiasm, at least at first. In the tradition of the quick-moving musical event, audience members are asked to hold their applause until intermission and the end of the performance.

Following opening remarks from President Dennis Voskuil, organist Brooke Van Wyk will perform “Fanfare,” by Jaques Nicolas Lemmens. Hannah Karel, soprano, will perform “Fair Robin I Love,” from “Tartuffe,” by Victor Herbert.

The Jazz Arts Collective will play “Jean-Pierre” and “Freedom Jazz Dance,” by Miles Davis and Eddie Harris. The Hope College Oboe Ensemble will perform “Concerto No. 3,” by Joseph Bodin de Boismortier.

Anna Prins, soprano, will perform “L’alba dalla luce l’ombra,” by Francesco Tosti. “The Serpent’s Kiss,” from “Garden of Eden,” by William Bolcom, will be performed by pianist Gabrielle Karel. Olivia Lehnertz, mezzo-soprano, will sing “Guess I’ll Hang My Tears Out to Dry,” by Jule Styne and Sammy Cahn. To end the first half, the symphony orchestra will perform “Libertango,” by Astor Piazzolla.

Beginning the second half will be the Chapel Choir singing “I Was Glad,” by Charles Hubert Hastings Parry. Lillian Droscha, pianist, will play “Andante Assai,” from “La Rondine,” by Giacomo Puccini. The Tutti and Accidentals string quartets will perform “String Octet, Op. 20 Scherzo,” by Felix Mendelssohn.

“Italian Concerto, BWV 971 Presco,” by Johann Sebastian Bach, will be played by pianist Sannan Cheng. The Jazz Chamber Ensemble will play “My Lonesome Nights,” by Charlie Jordan. Caleb Stuckey, violinist, accompanied by pianist Sarah Bast, will perform “Romanian Dances,” by Bela Bartok. “Glitter and Be Gay,” from “Candide,” by Leonard Bernstein, will be performed by soprano Brianne Crouse. Closing the concert, the Wind Ensemble will play “Canzona,” by Peter Mennin.

Tickets for Musical Showcase are $10 each and can be purchased at the ticket office in the Events and Conferences Office located downtown in the Anderson-Werkman Financial Center at 100 E. Eighth St. The Events and Conferences Office is open weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and can be called at 616-395-7890.  Tickets are also available online at hope.edu/tickets.
