Please join the Philosophy Department as we welcome Dr. Aaron Abma, a candidate for a position in the Philosophy Department. His lecture will be in Martha Miller 242 at 5pm on Wednesday, January 18 and is titled: Good-simpliciter and the human good.
Abstract: Theorizing about human wellbeing or the human good often begins by considering the various things that seem good for us. I begin instead with the idea that some things are just plain good. I believe that some things are "good-simpliciter" in the sense that they are worthy of love. If that is right, what could this mean for our understanding of our own good? In this talk, I propose an account of the human good according to which our highest good largely consists in (1) loving things that are good-simpliciter and (2) being loved by them.
