Please join the Philosophy Department as we welcome Dr. Marilie Coetsee, a candidate for a position in the Philosophy Department. Her lecture will be in Martha Miller 241 at 5pm on Monday, January 30 and is titled: On Giving Others the Benefit of the Doubt:
The Political Duty against Religious Dogmatism.
Abstract: While deliberative “exclusivists” argue that religious believers should as a rule refrain from appealing to religious reasons as bases for laws in political debates, deliberative “inclusivists” try to defend a role for such appeals in these debates. By showing why religious dogmatism may be unjustified in the context of political disagreements, Coetsee provides support for the kind of political duty against dogmatism that inclusivists defend. Moreover, by providing support for this duty, Coetsee strengthens inclusivists’ claims that religious citizens can contribute productively to democratic deliberation—aiding, rather than undermining, the constructive resolution of important political debates.
