Dr. Timpe will begin by exploring a number of ways that diverse kinds of disabilities can impair human agency. He will then argue that some of disability's diverse impacts on agency can be mitigated by paying attention to the social context in which agency is structured and enacted—that is, by paying attention to what Manuel Vargas calls "moral ecology." He will end by suggesting that the lessons about the importance of moral ecology apply not just to cases of disabled agency, but to agency more broadly. That is, he thinks that paying more explicit attention to the ecological embeddedness of our agency could mitigate various difficulties that we all face with regard to the exercise of our agency.
