“Cosmology and Supernovae Ia” By John Marriner, PhD
Cosmologists have converged on a “standard model” of cosmology that explains many aspects of the large scale structure of the universe. I will review some aspects of this standard model and briefly describe the role of Supernovae Ia in establishing the standard model.
Bio: Dr. Marriner worked initially in elementary particle physics, writing his thesis on the newly discovered neutral currents of neutrino interactions. After joining the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, he turned to accelerator physics, becoming an expert on stochastic cooling, a key technology in the realization of proton-antiproton colliding beam facilities. Later in his career, he turned to astrophysics, specializing in the study of type Ia supernovae. He led scientific teams collecting and analyzing supernovae for the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and the Dark Energy Survey.
