Steve Nelson’s photographs of a Great Lakes tug boat fleet provide an intimate view into a maritime industry that has operated on the lakes since the late nineteenth-century. Through examining myriad perspectives of 10/11, 5-6:30 PM De Pree Art Center + Gallery Steve Nelson’s photographs of a Great Lakes tug boat fleet provide an intimate view into a maritime industry that has operated on the lakes since the late nineteenth-century. Through examining myriad perspectives of the fleet’s operations, underlying themes associated with odysseys across expanses of water are explored; from departure to arrival, dormancy to action, birth to death, emergence to disappearance, industrial ambition to sentient reflection. Nelson’s interest in the “myth of reality” underlies his search for a vernacular of the subconscious, where dreams guide our awakenings.
