The Hope College dance affiliate StrikeTime Dance Theatre will present a live dance event for children, “Dancing Through the Pages: Illustrations,” on Friday, Jan. 12, at 7 p.m. and Saturday, Jan. 13, at 2 p.m. in the Knickerbocker Theatre in downtown Holland.

The public is invited. Admission is free.

All of the works on the program have been inspired by illustrations in art and literature, including pen and ink drawings, Dr. Seuss, graphic novels and more.  Nicole Flinn-Culver, artistic director, worked collaboratively with choreographers, students and Zeeland Public Schools visual arts teachers to develop a performance that shares the connections between dance and visual art.

The program will include “Pen and Ink”-sharing techniques of hatching, cross-hatching, scribbling and stippling through movement, along with other narrative illustrations inspired by “Why the Sun and Moon are in the Sky,” Dr. Seuss’ “Wocket in my Pocket,” and Shel Silverstein’s, “Ickle Me, Pickle Me, Tickle Me Too.” A new work, “The Lost Beats of Rhythm City,” explores the perspective of taking the viewer on an adventure of a graphic novel.

This learning experience will be brought to life through a collaboration with StrikeTime Dance Theatre. All Zeeland Public Schools third-grade students will be attending a live performance at the Knickerbocker in conjunction with learning about the artists in school. Student artwork will be on display in the theater during performances.
