The Clothesline Project honors survivors and victims of interpersonal violence (i.e. dating violence, harassment, sexual assault, and stalking). Anyone who has experienced such violence, at any time in their life, is encouraged to create a shirt. Survivor's families and friends are also invited to participate. It is the very simple process of designing a shirt that gives each person a new voice with which to expose an often horrific and unspeakable experience that has dramatically altered the course of their life. Participating in this project provides a powerful step towards helping a survivor break through the silence that has surrounded their experience.
The goal of this year’s Clothesline Project at Hope College is not only to allow survivors and those close to them the opportunity to break through and share their voice, but also to break through to everyone on campus! This will raise greater awareness about a very important issue. It is our hope that through this project, we will be able to provide student groups, faculty, staff, and students a blank t-shirt with which they can write, draw, paint, sew, glue or create a collage to convey their message about interpersonal violence. We understand this may be a new topic for some people. STEP is happy to provide Peer Educator-facilitated discussions on campus to raise awareness about consent, healthy relationships, unhealthy relationships, dating violence, sexual assault, stalking, gender equality, masculinity and femininity, etc. STEP Educators are also willing to assist with designing or developing ideas for a t-shirt if desired. Please email firstname.lastname@example.org if you would like to request an informational session!
Our goal is to have a campus-wide display of activism and awareness!
How to participate:
Pick up a blank t-shirt in the Student Development Office. For faculty and staff, we are happy to send t-shirts via campus mail, simply respond to this email. Topics/prompts will be given to help guide your design process. If you would like more than one t-shirt, have questions, or need help, please email email@example.com.
Return your completed t-shirt to Student Development by Friday, October 13th, at noon. If you would like to keep your t-shirt after the event, please put your student I.D. number on the inside of the shirt, and send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org stating this, and we will return it to you after the event. Know that the t-shirts we gather this year will also be used for future Clothesline Projects.
Spread the word! Let people know that this event is happening, and make sure to forward this email to any people/organizations you think would be interested in participating. We want to have as many submissions as possible!
The t-shirts will be on display around Hope College from October 10-21st. Look for your t-shirt around campus!
