Violin vs. Fiddle Gala Concert

Musical works from around the world and in a variety of styles will performed during a Violin vs. Fiddle Gala Concert featuring faculty member Mihai Craioveanu and several guest artists at Hope College on Monday, March 25, at 7:30 p.m. in the Concert Hall of the Jack H. Miller Center for Musical Arts.

The public is invited. Admission is free.

The event will be led by Craioveanu, who is a violinist and professor of music at Hope.  In addition to Craioveanu, the performers will include Julien Labro, accordion; Xiumin Peng, erhu; Sookkyung Cho, piano; Nate Roberts, mandolin; Hayes Griffin guitar; and Jack McDonald, string bass.

In American fiddle style, the musicians will play “Orange Blossom Special,” by Ervin T. Rouse, and “Hoe-Down,” by Aaron Copland. In jazz, they will play “Elite Syncopations,” by Scott Joplin. In Latin American tango style, they will play “El Choclo,” by Angel Villoldo; “Por Una Cabezza,” by Carlos Gardel; and “Oblivion,” by Astor Piazzolla. In Asian music, they will play “Horse Race,” which is a Mongolian folk tune, and “Song of India,” by Rimsky-Korsakov. Last, in Romanian style, they will play “First Romanian Rhapsody Op. 11,” by George Enescu; “Balada,” by Ciprian Porumbescu; “Romanian Folk Dances,” by Bela Bartok; “Hora Staccato” and “Hora Martisorului,” by Grigoras Dinicu; and “Calusari” and “Dance from Oas,” two Romanian dance medleys.
