Hope and Calvin Wind Ensembles to Present “The Rivalry in Concert”

The Hope College Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Gabe Southard, associate professor of music at Hope, will be playing a dance-inspired program, including “Suite of Old American Dances,” by Robert Russell Bennett; “Vientos y Tangos,” by Michael Gandolfi; and “Illuminations on America, the Beautiful,” which was premiered in Michigan by the Wind Ensemble at this year’s Musical Showcase and composed by Mark Camphouse.

The Calvin College Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Tiffany Engle, associate professor of music at Calvin, will be playing a song-inspired program, including “Glorioso,” by Yasuhide Ito; “Five Folk Songs for Soprano and Band,” by Bernard Gilmore; “Chant Funéraire,” by Gabriel Fauré; and “Shakata,” by Dana Wilson.

The Hope College Wind Ensemble and the Calvin College Wind Ensemble will combine to perform “Armenian Dances, Part 1,” by Alfred Reed.

“The Rivalry in Concert” will be performed again at Calvin College on Saturday, March 4, at 8 p.m. in the Covenant Fine Arts Center Auditorium.
