DESCRIPTION:Althea Jones\, a multidisciplinary artist based in Northeast Oh
io\, will present the address “Superhero Mode: Taking Charge of Your Story
and Success” as the 2025 Women’s History Month Lecture at Hope College on T
hursday\, March 6\, at 3:30 p.m. in the Concert Hall of the Jack H. Miller
Center for Musical Arts.\n\nThe public is invited. Admission is free.\n\nT
he doors will open at 3:15 p.m. There will also be an opportunity for the
audience to participate in a question-and-answer panel discussion following
the presentation. \n\nJones will share the pivotal moments that shaped her
artistic journey. Through stories of resilience\, self-discovery and commu
nity\, she will detail the self-love and education hacks that have been her
greatest tools in designing the life she always envisioned. The talk is in
tended to serve as a call to action for anyone ready to step into their own
superhero mode and transform their story into a masterpiece.\n \nAl
thea Jones is known for her community-driven work\, Skin Color\, which chal
lenges implicit bias and brings community members together to learn more ab
out themselves and each other. Through lighthearted conversations and inter
actions\, participants are encouraged to see more in their skin color by en
gaging in lively and enriching conversations about life\, connection and id
entity while color-matching a participant’s specific skin color with acryli
c paint. The goal of the project is to encourage self-love and actualizatio
n while simultaneously building community.\nSkin Color was conceptualized i
n early 2023 after Jones encountered a container of peachy ink labeled “ski
n color.” The label caused her to pause. She began to question her persona
l relationship with her own identity and skin color alongside mainstream ma
rketing and societal implicit bias. The project\, Skin Color\, seeks to exp
lore the ability to celebrate skin tone differences while healing an instan
ce of implicit bias in a unique and positive way.\n\nAlthea Jones is a mult
idisciplinary artist based in Northeast Ohio\, whose work centers on self-r
eflection and community building. Utilizing a diverse range of media\, incl
uding painting\, photography and performance art\, she creates narratives t
hat encourage introspection and foster collective engagement.\n\nJones hold
s a BA in justice studies from Kent State University and is currently worki
ng towards receiving a BFA at the University of Akron. Her academic backgro
und in justice studies deeply informs her artistic practice\, imbuing her w
ork with a strong commitment to social justice and community empowerment. T
hrough her art\, she aims to bridge personal exploration with broader socie
tal dialogues\, creating spaces for connection and meaningful discourse.\n\
nMarch is National Women’s History Month. The lecture is being presented by
the college’s Center for Diversity and Inclusion in collaboration with the
Women of Color United\, the Kruizenga Art Museum\, and the Office of Cultu
re and Inclusive Excellence.\n\nTo inquire about accessibility or if you ne
